Kazerne Dossin is a modern museum next to the actual building in which jews and other minorities were detained before being transported to concentration camps. The museum has a very broad explanation of the events which happened in Belgium and the rest of Europe.

There is a lot of text, so make sure you have a couple of hours in order to read. You will probably recognize something, but you will most likely learn something. The stories presented in the exhibition are sad and brutal. On the top floor you can walk out on the balcony for a view of Mechelen.

Mechelen was the deportion centre for Belgium. A branch rail line was built for the deportees to be taken to concentration camps. The actual building used is opposite the Kazerne Dossin which is a architecturally great museum.
You can view the actual deportation building and courtyard from a balcony in the museum. The museum shines a light on these atrocities. Harrowing but essential viewing. This museum documents the deportations of jews, gypsies and others that took place in Belgium during WWII.
There's sections on the history and build-up to the war, and social conditions of the times. There's a lot of detail, including a lot of history of individuals who were deported.

The visit starts with a brief film which also includes details of other genocides which have taken place. The information is spread over three floors and there's plenty to see, although when we were there a Monday there were a lot of school groups, and it was hard to see everything and a bit noisy at times. There's a memorial opposite, where the original infantry barracks have been converted into flats. It must have been seventeen years ago that I first started painting, or better say screwing up a wall.
But creating a graffiti drawing that is a thousand times the size of a piece of paper kept gaining my attention.
During this time, I learned how creative ideas can change an environment and how it sticks to the people. So It was obvious that this city-artist thing will go that direction in Mechelen.

A city with a rich history and therefore a challenge to set up graffiti art close to monuments, churches, and protected views. The exhibition is still opened until the 2nd of august.
