Ratcliff was an experienced bomber pilot and instructor when he joined No Squadron at the secret RAF airfield at Tempsford in June Initially he flew the four-engine Halifax, dropping supplies and agents into France, Denmark and Norway at night. With daylight approaching, he headed for Algeria where the dead engine was replaced before he returned to his base.
He flew his first sortie almost immediately and landed in a field near Angers with an SOE officer who was to bring back Henri Dericourt — suspected of being a double agent — for interrogation. Dericourt became suspicious and persuaded the SOE officer that he had to secure a new landing ground and Ratcliff returned with eight agents but not with Dericourt. A Lysander picked up the agent a week later. When landing fields were unavailable, agents were parachuted from the Hudson. In April Ratcliff took command of the Lysander flight.

The single-engine, black painted aircraft was capable of very short take offs and landings making it ideal for the hazardous operations. Sir John Leslie Bt, dies at Second world war veteran Sir John Leslie dies aged Bertie WW said:. Cobley was gunnery director in the battleship Duke of York, flagship of the Home Fleet, when she stalked and intercepted the German battleship Scharnhorst off the North Cape, Norway, on Boxing Day Guided by radar through the snow and darkness of the Arctic midwinter, Duke of York closed unseen to within 12, yards of the German, and at Cobley pressed the switch to fire four well-placed starshells, which caught the enemy by surprise.
A minute later, Duke of York was plunging under the huge waves of a following sea in gale force winds. The shell did not explode, but cut the cable to the radar above Cobley. With her higher speed, Scharnhorst now drew out of range, and it seemed that she might be lost in the night, until with her radar repaired, at Duke of York resumed firing radar-directed salvoes.
When Duke of York ceased fire, it was the end of an era, the last time a Royal Navy battleship would ever engage an enemy battleship.

Hank: Yeah, it helped. Bill: Look at him! Hank is practically asleep.

Druff: What do the rest of you think of Mozart? Alfie: I love him. He's a genius. Bill: I appreciate him, but I don't really listen to him. Alfie: All I can say is I listen to him at least a couple of times a week. Hank: He was like a punk in that century. He did what he wanted, whether it was accepted or not. Alfie: Taking things to extremes He didn't mind doing that Steve: Yeah Hank: Too many notes. Druff: Oh yeah.
Bill: They just need to give it a chance and listen to it a few times. Alfie: A band like Rush probably could be criticized the same way we are Hank: We're also influenced by Dixie Dregs. Druff: Do you see yourselves reaching that type of status? Bill: We have real complications fitting-in the music scene Rush fit in a certain way, but we can't even fit in that way. We're not punk, we're not straight ahead rock. We're just outcast beyond anything. We don't try, that's what's fucked.
Hank: We're not real hard like a speed metal band. We're right inbetween.

We're so far Steve: Farvegnugen! Bill: Laughing Shut up! Hank: We're so inbetween, that Bill: Let's just say we're versatile. We have at least one song that will appeal to somebody no matter what they're into. Hank: We're on our own road right now. Druff: What would you call it?
I swear, not even a joke. We're slaves to our own musical desires, more than our audience's. We're taking an uncommon route in the fact that we're not trying to jump on a bandwagon. Druff: Are there any other bands you'd like to be billed with? Who's audience do you think you could swipe?
Hank: We could play with anyone. Bill: The only ones I've thought o fare big bands. There's no bands that haven't made it that we can think of that we'd want to play with.
