It will be actually difficult to find a place, bar, beach or whatever in Barcelona that's not gay-friendly, in the sense they will not care less about who you are or if you enter there hooding hands with your boyfriend. The area of "gayxample" is not a gay ghetto, is just that many places there are "hetero-friendly" ;- Hang around that area and check the bars and clubs, but explore the rest of the city too. The "gay beach" in Barcelona is Platja de la Mar Bella you may find LGTB people in every other beach, but this one is nearly exclusively patronized by gay males.

I have heard staying at a hostal over a hotel can be a great way to make new friends. Do you think 10 days would be a sufficient length for this trip? As Belsaita mentions, Barcelona is a very open-minded city in general terms, the odd moron exists too! And for this reason, although there are some so-called "gay-friendly" places I think we should say instead, some places which are especially frequented by LGBT because in truth you'll see a very mixed crowd everywhere across the city.
The Gaixample gai, Catalan for "gay" and eixample, "extension" is the nickname of a central area in Barcelona's Eixample district where, since the end of the 20th century, lots of gay shops, bars, discos and restaurants have appeared. Meanwhile, the gay population has risen enormously, because lots of members of the LGBT collective have settled in this area of the Catalan capital.
This has made it an important attraction for gay tourism, mainly at night-time. Rainbow flags can be seen sometimes in this area.
